Letters to the next president from higher education leaders

Earlier this year, The Korn Ferry Institute published a book titled Letters to the Next President: Strengthening America’s Foundation in Higher Education. The book was the idea of Stephen Joel Tractenberg, who served as president of The George Washington University from 1988-2007. Tractenberg edited the book with contributions from some 20 other higher education leaders. I had the honor of contributing a chapter on adult-serving institutions, and the book has been well received. Copies may be obtained from global.marketing@kornferry.com or by calling 310-843-4126.

In its September-October 2008 edition, Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, also published a series of letters to the next president. The contributors include Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, American Council on Education President Molly Broad, and others. I particularly enjoyed the piece by Richeal Young, a student at the College of San Mateo. And I might note that Ms. Young does a very nice job of describing the students who attend community colleges, including some who are part of The Other 85 Percent.

About

Welcome to The Other 85 Percent. So what does "the other 85 percent" refer to? Research has shown that only about 15 percent of higher education students still fit the traditional definition of young adults age 18 to 22 who live on campus and go to school full time. more
